Unsuccessful country singer Art Long (Dennis Quaid) turns to boxing in order to make money, and makes it all the way to the nationals. He is boosted by the support of his wife (Carlene Watkins), father (Wilford Brimley) and mother (Fran Ryan), as well as his friends and, of course, the promoter (Warren Oates) who has helped guide him in his new career.
