A young widow living in the Canadian Northwest with her eight-year-old son hires a young man as a helper. She soon falls in love with the helper and they marry, against the wishes of her son.A single widow (Susan Hayward) raises her young son after losing her husband to a forest fire. Realizing that raising a young man and running a ranch will be difficult, she hires a ranch hand (Stephen Boyd) to help with the many chores around the compound. She begins to fall in love with the stoic handyman, much to her young son's consternation. The handyman, in turn, finds much to admire about the gutsy young woman, but keeps something of an emotional distance because of his own demons. When the two decide to marry the young boy acts out and is dealt with harshly (but fairly) by his new stepfather. His new bride disagrees with his treatment of her son, and this causes friction in the still-growing relationship. He eventually starts abusing both of them and begins a relationship with a local woman (Barbara Nichols). One night after brawling, he is arrested and jailed for a month. When he's released he returns to a home where his belongings have been moved to the barn; a once-promising relationship gone awry because of demons he is unwilling to face. It isn't until a natural disaster strikes the ranch that the (still) conflicted family comes together to help themselves and each other.
