An agreeably happy musical, Stars and Stripes Forever is a bright and bouncy biography of America's "march king" John Philip Sousa. The film follows the great band leader from his early struggles organizing his own band after leaving the Marine Corps to his later life when he tries to shake the "march king" moniker by writing romantic ballads.The movie is enhanced with a wholly fictional subplot of a young musician, Willie Little, who invents the Sousaphone on behalf of the great master. Willie loses his leg while fighting in the Spanish American War, and upon his return makes an inspirational solo appearance with the Sousa band.
