Forty Guns

1957 | Western | TV-PG
Tough gal Jessica Drummond (Barbara Stanwyck) is a hard-bitten landowner in Cochise, Arizona. With her posse of nasty hired guns, she has been able to rule over the county with merciless control and an iron fist. Her power is so entrenched that even the local sheriff (Dean Jagger) is powerless to do anything against her.Enter Griff Bonnell, a taciturn gunslinger who has just been deputized as a U.S. Marshall. He and his brothers try to restore some semblance of law and order to the county. They are rebuffed and fought at every turn by Jessica's hotheaded brother Brockie (Jon Ericson). While Jessica falls in love with Bonnell, his brother falls in love with one of the female hired hands. The day of Griff's brother's wedding, Brockie snaps and kills the man.Although Jessica is shocked and torn between her family and the man she loves, she understands that Brockie must be dealt with. Griff then faces his biggest moral dilemma: how to avenge his brother's death yet maintain his vow of non-violence. Cult director Samuel Fuller gives a new visual twist on an old formula with his innovative camera angles and potent action scenes. Although the film didn't do well in the U.S. when it was released, it was a huge hit with European film buffs.
